There are several countries, sometimes at peace sometimes at war. There is a large wilderness area that is the home to monsters. There is a large area called the Wastes. The Wastes were one a temperate paradise but when evil overran it a wizard (group of wizards and priests?) named Rosteau? caused what is now called the Invoked Devastation. It turned the paradise into a wasteland that now contains some ruins and weird monsters. There are also some areas that cause strange things to happen and are more dangerous depending on how musch magic a creature or person wields. So where a first level magician might suffer no ill effects from entering an area a 5th level magician might be plagued by headaches and a 10th level mage could be stricken unconscious
