Steve's Basement: Tanaedra - Starting a Character
There are no adventurers in Tanaedra. If you carry a weapon or wear armor all of the time then you are either a member of the
Army, Guard or a criminal hiding from the forementioned. There is no such things as wizards, sorcerers, clerics or druids.
The game will start by throwing the players into adventuring and encountering things that they've never encountered or heard
of before. However, the players will already be more exceptional than their peers and those around them. Because of this
players will have their starting levels in one of the following NPC classes: Aristocrat, Commoner, Expert and Warrior.
Players will be from the County of Aldermist with the most of the adventures taking place in or around county capital,
Aldermist. Players can be from anywhere in the county and may know each other or know of each other.
Background Levels
All characters will start with three levels in Background Levels. The levels will be in one of the following NPC classes from
the DMG: Aristocrat, Commoner, Expert and Warrior. This will essentially start you off at 3rd level. Rules for bonus feats and
abilities apply to NPC levels. You may multi-class your NPC levels.
Gestalt Levels and Background Levels
We will be using the Gestalt leveling system from the Unearthed Arcana along with a modification to obtaining 1st level in PC
classes. Normally 1st level is 0 XP, the modification is as follows:
| PC Level |
XP |
Special |
| 1st |
1,000 |
Gestalt 1st NPC Level/Max HP/x4 Skill Points |
| 2nd |
2,000 |
Gestalt 2nd NPC Level/Max HP |
| 3rd |
3,000 |
Gestalt 3rd NPC Level/Max HP |
When Gestalting you take the best of the shared stats for each class level. Hit Die, Skill Points, Individual Saves and Base
Attack Bonus.
At 4th level characters will Gestalt with one PC level and one NPC level. The NPC level is there for roleplaying and character
development purposes. The NPC level must fight the character concept (background).
Starting Character Rules
- Players will start with max hit points
- Alignment: Overall the Empire is a LE society with the "progessive" areas like Aldermist being more LN. Common alignments
found in the Empire are LE, LN, NE, N and an occasional NG.
- Each player will have three feats (1 for 1st, bonus human feat and 3rd level bonus). You must use your 1st level feat but
may hold the bonus feats until your PC class is choosen.
- Players will have a base AC of 12 instead of 10. This is due to their exceptionalism.
- No starting gold. Players may have some savings. All players will have a place to stay, clothes and normal items. Players
earn wages from their jobs.
- Those who start as Priest of the Church may know both orisons and cantrips for 0 level spells.
