Background
Recent History
The players were turned to stone several hundred (or thousand) years ago. While they've been busy serving as pigeon congregation areas, the world has proceeded without them.
In the time they've been gone, entire civilizations have flourished and then been destroyed. Nearly every mythos they're familiar with has experienced its version of the apocalypse.
The result is that there are very few members of their race left - most who were native to this plane were taken by their gods, one way or another. The few who remain are mostly non-native to this plain, druids, or half-breeds between humans and some higher or lower being.
The gods have mostly left this plane and the Earth Spirit is the most powerful being remaining. The druids remain but have mostly taken up wild shapes to remain hidden.
The natives who remain are mostly savages, worshippers of animal totems. The totems themselves are empowered by the Earth Spirit and can animate to lead the tribe in battle.
Player History
One of the players was part of a group that had an agreement to use treasure to restore fallen comrades. He fell, but his comrades twisted the agreement so they could profit. They paid to have the stone to flesh take place at some far future date.
