- I would argue that a backup plan did go into effect. Tim stopped being a most of the time caster and went into melee mode. Tom got taken out of harm's way. Joe and his follower's filled in for Tim.

- Tim casts uses miracle to cast simulcrum and makes a 9hd keldar for each party member.
He firsts casts greater reduction and permanancy on himself to make each of the simulcrums a tiny sized mini-keldar for easy transportation, then removes the spells from himself
At 9hd a mini-keldar can hold a action to cast raise dead on nathan or a wall of stone between a disjuction spell and thier desinated character which will block the burst effect of the spell.
Plus you dress them up in coustums

- That's why I think we should think about backups. Sometimes you suck against a certain monster. Melinda is shit against a golem for example.

- Uhm, with his magic gone, the +5 Defender was + nothing. I don't think you're getting that our will saves are horrible. Mine's +8. I needed a 20 to save anything. I saved one item of eight and it wasn't the one I'd have selected.
As for snapping up items for one stat, I'm sure Keith went for the INT stuff first, Tim went for STR, etc. Each of us has a focus and it is easier to pick up things in that focus. As soon as Tom wanted a STR item, that meant he was competing with someone else for it.
I'm crap with a bow, Tom's crap with a two-handed axe. We each have our strengths. Arguing about it now seems pointless.

- how can you be only d10+2 with a sword when the sword alone is +5 plus strength and no one stopped you from taking weapon spec sword at some point in 22 levels or taking one of multiple magic items to boost strength rather than trying to grab up every item that boosted dex.

- I have a +5 Defender. The issue after my bow and magic was gone was that I was d10+2 with a sword. When the bad guys have the DR like they did, not even the sword would do that much damage. I think a few items need to be enhanced with some DR bypassing options. I carry silver, cold-iron and adamantium arrows. But I think I need Holy and other options most likely on my belt or gloves so it affects all my weapons.

- of course maybe it's not so much finding new spells or itmes but redistributing the ones people already have to people more likely to use them. Tom's issue the other night was he couldn't do anything after his bow was gone. There are enough magic swords in the party that someone should have been able to hand him one so he could fight.

- There is a spell somewhere that lets you bring a scroll potion or wand to hand and ther are gloves of storing that can do the same thing. you put the scroll or wand or potion in the glove and it goes extra dimensional till you summon it back.

Contingent spells can only be a max of sixth level. Or a third of your caster level.
Maybe a leomand's chest with backup stuff? I seem to remember a spell that summons a prepared item. That could be a contingent.

- Sacred Quiver: only fuctions for good character, my artificer can whip one up in 5 days for 2200gp. swift action grants bless weapon spell on up to 50 arrows within for 10 rds 3 times a day. Arrows only hold enchantment for 1 rd after being drawn. bless weapon makes affected weapon good and auto confirms any crits rolled.
Counterspelling:
Put disjuction and other FU spells on a scroll, hand it to Karnack or Noreen, have them hold a action to counterspell.
Cast contigentcy to activate time stop when you say "qwj", make a spellcheck roll to spot the spell, go into time stop and get out a scroll and save a action to counterspells or cast antimagic field

- where is the peerless archer class so I can read it?
On Dec 8, 2011 at 02:54 pm Tom said :
- I think my biggest problem is that despite all my magic items I wasn't doing that much damage since I didn't have the right magic to punch through their defenses. Even with my Able Sniper feat allowing me to add my dex bonus to damage, I'm only d8+14 so when you get into enemies that have DR20/magical property it really doesn't add up.
I found a class feature in the Peerless Archer class called Power Shot which is basically Power Attack for an archer. Mick, can I start learning that feat?

- and that is why the game so often emphasizes team work. You might be able to kill monsters quickly and efficently but you have to first be able to get to them. Spellcasters might have a betteradvantage but that only counts if they can cast thier spells. What happens when the 20 guards constantly pepper spell casters with arrows or javelins of lightning so they cannot concentrate to cast spells. While the enemy spellcaster hammers them.

- I think things are different for characters with spells, especially wizards. Those of us who want to hit things start strong but become (comparatively) less effective over time. I think the balance starts shifting around 7th or 8th level. Mike, Tom, and I are definitely overmatched by the rest of you.
Our only chance to continue to contribute is magic items.
I know that probably sounds a little stupid given I'm playing Kruug! but really I wouldn't have been in the first fight without the flight of my celestial armor. I wouldn't have been in the second fight if Keith's spells hadn't found our target and teleported us there. I'd have been dead if Joe and Tim hadn't used healing. I was much more powerful using my belt and spell-sharing bracelet. Without those things I was considerably less effective after the disjunction.
Magic items are less important to powerful spell-casters. For those of us without spells, we need items, no matter how many feats we have.

- Well a standard encounter that counts asa challenge should use approximately 20% of the parties entire resources... hit points, magic, spells etc. That the encounter did alot of damage to people well the party hasa ton of healing available with a paladin/pries who has a paladin follower and the party has a high priest and even potions of healing floating around. This boils down to th part where Tim should not always have to spend all his time healing as others could step in. Yes sometimes Magic items will be lost.. many monsters have sunder especially giants and I have refrained from using it agianst players to avoid whining about losing a favored item. But many of your opponents are intellignet so why wouldn't they use the same sorts of spells the party uses agaisnt them if they have access to such spells.

- Thinking about it, the fact that it is an epic campaign is a minor part of it. Because each party member has probably half again as many feats as we should for our level combined with a ridiculous amount of magic items the only way we can be challenged is with beasts that need a weapon X and can withstand ridiculous damage. But as this incidence points out it is a shaky balance.

- Which is why we need a plan "B". It is a very effective stratagem to deprive an enemy of their powerful crap. I'm just surprised it hasn't happened sooner. Ironically if Melinda's items had been blasted it would have just been annoying.
On Dec 6, 2011 at 03:18 pm Steve said :
- At epic levels everyone is dependent on their gear to some extent. You can reduce that dependence, but I don't think you can eliminate it. I certainly haven't heard anyone say "I'm powerful enough with the things I have" - "I already have a better item" is much more likely.
I lost about 7 points of damage and +7 to hit in the aftermath of the spell. My already poor AC lost 5 points to become 18. If the fighting had gone to range, I'd have been out of it completely. The only thing that kept me up was 2 heal spells and low AC opponents.
The spell punishes warriors since our will saves are so poor. With a target of 29, I had to roll a 20 to save anything.
